The idea of experiment was to see whether monkeys can get addicted to the drugs and what influence will it have on them, what will they cause.
They thought that this experiment will help them to get an idea how humans body will react to drugs. And they did that experiment with monkeys because it was unethical to do it with people.
The results of the experiment were not so good. The monkeys became addicted to the drugs and they were out of their minds. A proof of it is that some of them even broke their arms when they were trying to escape. The monkeys that took cocaine suffered convulsions, Some other monkeys ripped off their own fingers (possibly because of hallucinations). Another monkey taking amphetamines took all of the fur from his arm and belly, and in the case of cocaine and morphine mixed, the monkeys died after two weeks.
