Tragic Hero: Romeo Montague

By Javier

#1 Romeo is considered a Tragic Hero based on what has happened in his life.

a) Romeo has been in a quite complicated situation. As no one else can ever be in. this makes his life(story) unique. Therefore he is what we call, a Tragic Hero.

#2 Romeo is a special character, for he is mightier and better than the commonfolk.

a) Romeo Montague is the son/heir to the powerful Lord Montague of fair Verona. Therefore, he is a figure of great authority and is mightier than the commonfolk, like us. He is a well disciplined, righteous young gentleman. Even the Capulets showed somewhat acceptance for him.

#3 Romeo should be classified as a Tragic Hero because he has endured unfortunate badluck.

A) In the beginning of his lovelife, he had fallen in love with a girl named Rosaline, who did not love him back, because she was a nun (in training). He then falls in love with a girl named Juliet, only to learn that the girl was a Capulet, the daughter of his hated enemy. His best friend, Mercutio, is slain by Tybalt of the Capulets. Romeo vows revenge and kills Tybalt, which results in his banishment, while banished he receives notice of Juliet's death.

#4 As he faces his problems, Romeo, the Tragic Hero, realizes the consequences, and takes action.

A) He believes he is making the right decision of taking a poison and making his way to Juliet's tomb. There, he will lay next to his deceased beloved, and drink the poison to die next to her.

#5 With all that, Romeo's struggle to end his life with a happily ever after, really ended in a tragedy.

A) Romeo had struggled to find the girl that was right for him. He then meets Juliet, his forbidden beloved. An unexpected encounter with Tybalt ends in his bestfriend's and Tybalt's deaths and his banishment from Verona. While out of town, he receives word of the death of Juliet. When he rushes to the tomb, he takes a poison and drinks it. The second before he dies, he manages to get one last look at Juliet (as she awakens from her deep slumber).
