Oscar burns down his hideout and attempts to run away with Nia.
- Oscar's older brother Winston dies at Oscar's 10th birthday party
- The family moves to Candor, founding the city, but his mother leaves after a few months
Nia gets away because Oscar sacrifices himself for her.
Oscar makes CDs for Nia in order to keep her from changing into the perfect Candor girl.
Oscar's father uses subliminal messages to erase bad habits and attempt to create a utopian society.

Oscar's memory is erased, but he asks for lilacs in his sleep. Could it be that he remembers?
Nia arrives in Candor
Nia is caught and her memory is erased in the listening room, so Oscar decides to leave Candor in order to save her and be with her.
Oscar quickly becomes obsessed with Nia and her lilac scented hair.
Nia is angry when she finds out about Oscar's messages and tags the town's monuments with warnings about the messages.
