Older vs Younger

Life Cycle

  • Females reach sexual maturity at approximately age 12.
  • The pregnancy period is between 230 and 320 days.
  • They normally give birth to a single young. Off springs have a black face and hands with ears hidden behind their whiskers.
  • The young cared for until 4-5 years old.
  • Females also have 5-6 babies in their lifetime.
  • Baby boys remain with mothers group for a lifetime.
  • Baby girls leave mothers group at the age of maturity to make her own off springs.

Bonobo's have Long legs a short arm and a narrow trunk. They are smaller than most great apes and have flatter faces. They even have a rounder skull. Bonobos have a obvious tail which means it is easy to identify. This is only grown by adults. They are known to have black fur which may change to a grayish color as they get older.

The status of bonobos is currently endangered due to :

  • Loss of habitat because of a rapid growth in the human population,agriculture,and commercial logging.
  • Civil unrest in the region around their territories.
  • Poaching for (meat,pets,or medical purposes).
  • Diseases transmitted from humans.
  • Getting trapped in snares.
  • Lack of information on species.
