Homeostasis

How does the Skeletal System contribute to homeostasis?

The function related to homeostasis is Storing Minerals and Nutrients. This is necessary for the body to function properly. Creating Red Blood Cells is also related.

Red blood cells

Common diseases/disorders cont...

Associated with the Appendicular Skeleton:

Rickets- disease (normally in children) caused by lack of vitamin D, characterized by imperfect calcification, bone softening and distortion of bones.

Paget's Disease- disease that disrupts the replacement of old bone tissue with new bone tissue causing bones to become fragile and painful.

Osteoporosis- condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile due to the loss of tissue, normally caused by hormone changes.

Functions of the Skeletal System

Common diseases/disorders

1. Provides Support for the entire body

2. Protects internal organs

3. Assists body movements

4. Stores Calcium and Phosphorus

5. Creates red blood cells

6. Stores fats

Main Parts

Associated with the Axial Skeleton:

Herniated Disks- condition where the cartilage in an intervertebral disk ruptures and protrudes posteriorly into the spinal cord.

Spina Bifida- congenital defect when the spinal cord protrudes from the spinal column.

Bones make up the skeletal system. Normally the system contains 206 bones. There are two parts that make up the system- Axial and Appendicular.

Spina Bifida

Connection to other systems

The most important way the Skeletal System connects to other systems is Protection.

Bones and Muscles work together to provide body movement. The interaction between the Muscular and Skeletal Systems is constant.

The Skeletal System is dependent on the Integumentary System for the calcium that keeps the bones strong and hard.

Hormones are needed for bones to grow and stay strong, linking the Endocrine and Skeletal Systems together.

Facts

  • The smallest bones found in the body are in the ear.

  • Over half the bodies bones are in the hands and feet.

  • An extra rib can occur in the body (like mine!) but isn't common, it can cause health issues also.
