The flaps are on the back of the roof. The left one is perpendicular the the cars length and the right at a 45° angle to the left one. The right flap is at an angle because the cars tend to spin to the right. They are 20" by 8"and attached with a hinge and two carbon fiber wires.
Under the flap the air pressure is normally the same as the pressure outside. If the pressure outside the falls the flap starts to rise up. The wind catches the exposed edges as the car turns and creates turbulence keeping he car on the ground.
How They Look in Action
Roof flaps on the cars were invented to help prevent the car gaining air and flipping. Before the flaps were put onto the cars flipping was a normal and very scary thing. Now it is harder for a car to flip, but not impossible.
