New England in the 1690s

What can you find about their social structures/ Hierarchies?

They had a democratic society. They wanted to establish themselves as rightful interpreters of the Bible, independent of an inherited social and cultural order.

What were their main fears and anxieties?

The harsh winters in Massachusetts was a main concern for the settlers. Also foreign diseases, found in the America's. Another fear was that their food would not support, the population of Plymouth.

How did they survive?

The Pilgrims survived because of their faith.

Also the Wampanoag tribe would help them make shelter and properly grow crops in the harsh winter. As well as dividing their work forces properly.

What type of people settled in Massachusetts?

The Puritans and the Pilgrims established their settlement in 1620 at Plymouth, Massachusetts when they sailed to Massachusetts on the Mayflower.

Some immigrants wanted to reform the church of England, while others wanted to break away. Therefore, they settled in Massachusetts in search of religious freedom.
