Built Landscapes

Example of a built landscape:

Examples of built landscapes

The city of Adelaide is a perfect example of a built landscape, as it has multiple buildings, roads etc. Adelaide has been civilized by humans and has a living population of around 1.2 million.

Singapore is also a classic example of a built landscape and is currently a very over populated city, (the most over-populated in the world). There are many tall buildings, busy roads etc. in Singapore.

Positive and Negative impacts of built landscapes:

Positive: Without built landscapes, it would be nearly impossible to live in certain places as there would be no civilisation. There would be no buildings, roads, houses etc.

Negative: Pollution increases as the population grows, landscapes are littered with rubbish, dirt etc, cities can become over populated as more and more people begin to live there.

What are built landscapes?

Characteristics of built landscapes

Unlike some naturally occurring landscapes, built landscapes are constructed by humans. Certain built landscapes can provide evidence of human settlement in the area. Landscape comes from the word ‘landschap’. Features such as roads, buildings, sewerage systems and telecommunication systems are signs of a built landscapes and human interaction.
