Restaurant to Cell Analogy

Vacuole -> Fridge

Lysosome -> Bus Boys

The vacuole stores materials in example as salt and water for the cell. The fridge stores supply's and food to be used by the restaurant.

Cell Membrane -> Door

The Cell Wall -> Restaurant wall

The cell membrane allows materials to travel in and out of the cells, comparable to the door of a restaurant as it lets people inside and outside.

The restaurant wall is like the cell wall because it protects, supports, and gives shape to the restaurant. It also protects from outside conditions.

Peroxisome -> Dumpster

Microvilli -> Mop Bucket/Janitor

The bus boys are like the lysosome because bus boys clean the tables and clean away excess food as the lysosome breaks down and changes substances of enzymes.

An Animal Cell is like Restaurant

Peroxisomes protect the cell from its own production of toxic hydrogen peroxide. In the same way a dumpster discards of waste that is not needed and could be harmful to others.

Mitochondria-> Energy Supply

Golgi Apparatus -> Waiters

The microvilli increases the surface area of the cell is useful for absorption and secretion functions. Just as a mop and janitor deal with absorbing of spilled fluids and other secretions.

The mitochondria supplys energy throughout the cell as energy is supplied through the restaurant to keep it functioning

Nucleus -> Restaurant Owner

The golgi apparatus processes, sorts,and deliver proteins. The waiters put in orders, receive the food and deliver it too the customers.

Nuclear Membrane -> Drink Cups

The nuclear membrane separates the nucleoplasm, or fluid inside the nucleus. In the same way cups separate the fluid from spilling outside onto the table.

Plasma Membrane -> Host

The nucleus is like the owner because the owner controls their staff. The nucleus controls DNA. The owner is also the control of his entire restaurant as the nucleus is the control center of the cell.

The plasma membrane allows some substances to pass through and others to not. Hosts do the same with customers. Some may be seated others may not.

Chromatin -> Building Instructor

Cytoskeleton -> Structure of Building

Chromatin undergoes various forms of change in its structure. It is comparable to the building instructor who designed the building.

Smooth ER -> Desserts

Nucleolus -> Training

The smooth ER produces lipids and proteins. The desserts represent the lipids (fats) of smooth ER

Both the cytoskeleton and structure of the building are frames and shaping for the cell/restaurant.

Ribosomes -> Chefs

Cytosol -> Fountain Pop

Ribosomes are assembled and made ready in the nucleolus. This is related to a chefs training and previous knowledge being passed on from another chef to be made ready to prepare food.

Centriole -> Manager

The ribosomes synthesizes proteins while chefs make food or also synthesize.

Rough ER -> Line Cook

Cytosol is the fluid part of the cells structure. Much like how fountain pop is the main source of fluid for customers.

The manager is involved in the organizing and division of labor. The Centriole forms spindle fibers to separate chromosomes during cell

division. Both deal with division and organization.

The Rough ER assembles many proteins. The line cooks assemble the food.
