This year we will be using a program called Fundations. The program will be a daily lesson of about 40 minutes using manipulatives to create words and reinforce the phonetic skills taught in order for them to master spelling strategies of encoding as well as decoding skills. Our spelling lists will come from trick words that must be memorized as well as words that follow the weekly spelling pattern. The spelling tests will be on Friday and will count as a grade. We will also have a dictation test at the end of each unit that will indicate whether or not the child has mastered the spelling skill taught in a particular lesson. The dictation test will be graded, but will not count as the spelling test grade on the report card. This grade will indicate whether or not your child is mastering encoding (learning to write sounds) sounds taught in 2nd grade.

Religion
While both teachers lesson plan together, Mrs. Ruiz will be teaching Religion in the afternoons. She will present the material in a variety of ways including: Smartboard lessons, role playing, and discussion. While we are both the primary teachers we do not handle the registration for First Reconciliation or First Eucharist. The children will be focusing on learning:

First Reconciliation (December 10, 2016)
First Eucharist (April 29th / 30th and May 6th / 7th 2017)

Homework
Please make sure to be reading nightly with your child. They should read between 15 and 20 minutes nightly. They can read to you or you read to them.
Math
Most nights the children will have a math homework page in their math workbook. The problems will be a combination of skills we are working on and problem solving. The page is due the next day. Please do not correct if there are only one or two errors. However, if you notice your child has missed the entire concept, please help them with the page and either write us a note on the page or send us an email.
Spelling
Spelling will be done on Spellingcity.com nightly
All games / assignments are due by Friday morning
If the children are assigned sentences parents are allowed to type for the children if they dictate the sentences to the parent / guardian

Birthdays
We love to celebrate birthdays! Here's how you can help it go smoothly on your child's special day.
Birthdays
To celebrate:
Email the teachers and let them know if you would like to send something in. Should you send in a snack it must be here by snack time.
Have enough for the whole class (we have 22 students)
It is always helpful when the treat is the same for everyone!
Healthy treats are always a wonderful alternative. (fruit kabobs, bubbles, party favors, fruit and dip, etc.)
Students are allowed to dress out for their birthdays. Should their birthday fall over a weekend or on a Mass day, they will be called up the Friday before or the Tuesday before, respectively.

Communication
Plus Portals
We will be using Plus Portals as our main source of weekly communication this year. On Fridays, we will email you our weekly newsletter. We will also post it for your reference. Plus Portals will also contain pertinent information such as class lists, super star information, and schedules.
Emails
Email is by far the best and fastest way to communicate with us. Please make sure you email both teachers as we are both busy and often only have a few minutes to talk in between activities with the children. Please note: Karin spells her name with an "i" not an "e".
Conferences
Rules & Incentives
2nd Grade Expectations & Rules
Rules & Incentives
3 Main Rules: Respect others, self, and school property
Strives for quality work
Follows directions, uses time wisely, on task
Appropriate behavior in all areas of the school (hallway, restroom, Jacoba, recess)
Homework turned in on time
Think About It Forms
We also believe children need structure in order to understand the expectations of the classroom teacher. While we use positive reinforcement as our first choice of discipline, we also use “Think About It” forms when students need to reflect on a particular action they have chosen. When a student chooses to disobey a rule the first reminder serves as a warning. For the second reminder, fill out a “Think About It” form and be on yellow. If the behavior persists, the student will be on red, fill out a “Think About It” sheet, and we will be in contact with his or her parents. For extreme cases, school administration will be involved. All “Think About It” sheets must be returned with a parent signature the following day.
Incentives
We believe positive reinforcement is one of the best ways to encourage appropriate behavior. We use many ways to help encourage Christian behavior. These include: Quiet Critters and Good Time Tickets. Good Time Tickets can be turned in for the following prizes listed below. It is the child’s responsibility to keep up with these tickets. If they are lost, they will not be replaced. (You are welcome to keep them at home in a safe place if you wish.)

Thanks for coming! Have a great night!
Class Dojo
Class Dojo is an online behavior management system. It allows parents, students and teachers to access and update a child's behavior daily. We will be using this system in conjunction with Good Time Tickets.
Grading & Tuesday Folders
Grading System & Tuesday Folders
Grading System
Tuesday Folders
The Tuesday Folder is used to send home all work completed during the previous week including tests and work kept for a grade. Please keep all work unless stamped “please sign and return”. There will be a sheet attached to their folder in which we ask you to sign your name to show you have looked at all the work inside. There is a place for comments and questions as well. You are also welcome to email us with any questions you have about their work or any discrepancies you see. We will do our best to get back with you regarding any questions or concerns you have via email or a phone call within 24 business hours of your child’s folder returning to school.
All written work done will be graded, not all will be recorded. Every paper the children do will be reviewed. If it has a plus, check, or minus it was recorded as a grade in our gradebook. If there is a sticker or smilie face on the top of the paper it was not recorded in our grade book. The worksheets, evaluations of concepts, and tests used towards their grades will be sent home only on Tuesdays in their Tuesday Folders. Please note, we evaluate children in multiple ways and not all evaluations will be done with paper and pencil.
If you have particular information concerning your child that you would like to share with us, please do not hesitate to email or arrange a conference. Scheduled conferences are in October and January. The October conferences are required conferences. If you are going on vacation, please be sure to schedule knowing your presence is required during one slot in October. Also, children are not allowed to be at the conferences. There will be an option to sign up for child care during conferences times when you sign up with signupgenius.
Super Star
Super Star
Everyday: The children will be responsible for taking home our estimation jar each night and filling it with items. The jar returns to school daily, we estimate, and then it is sent back home to be refilled and returned to school the following day. The minimum amount of items should be 10 and the maximum should be 100. Please count the items and put a piece of paper in the jar with the number on it, so we do not have to count every time. This will be used during our Math lesson daily.
Monday: The student will bring a poster in they fill out over the weekend. The teacher will provide the poster & directions. The students should bring in a few pictures to share of their family.

Tuesday: The class will share compliments for the Super Star and they will be written out, laminated, and posted outside in the hallway for the duration of the week.

Wednesday: The student will bring their favorite book to share with their peers. It should be a book that can be read in about 10 minutes. The student will read their book to their peers. If they do not feel comfortable reading in front of the class, the teachers will be happy to read for them!

Friday: This is their opportunity to bring in something special for “Show and Tell”.
Each child will be chosen to be the Super Star for one week. The children have already been assigned a week. The list of dates are posted on PlusPortals.
We have snack everyday around 9:40 A.M. Please
send a HEALTHY, easy to eat snack with your child
so they may stay fueled and ready to learn. We encourage you to send in an emergency snack with your child’s name printed in permanent marker on the outside of the bag. It needs to be a peanut free, non-perishable snack. We will notify you if your child’s emergency snack has run out if you choose to send one in.
Please label all of your child’s coats, sweatshirts, and jackets. Just putting a last name or initials on the label will help us find misplaced clothing. On P. E. days (Tuesdays and Fridays) your child needs to wear appropriate clothing and shoes. Please remember girls may not wear nail polish, unless it is clear, and must wear stud earrings.

Please practice the prayers assigned with your children on a weekly basis. We will not have the children write to practice their prayers in their agenda nightly, however this should be something you are practicing with your child until they are memorized. They are required to have them memorized and will be tested one on one at the end of each trimester. The prayers will be in the Religion section of their binders and will remain there for the entire year. Please keep this page in their binders.
