Explorers of the 15th & 16th Century

Francisco Pizarro

  • Pizarro was born in Trujillo, Spain in the 15th century.
  • 200 men helped invade the Inca Empire with Pizarro, they managed to kill over 2,000 Inca's.
  • The soldier never learned how to read and write.

Experience

Pizarro discovered the Pacific Ocean, San Miguel in Northern Peru. He was known for the attack on Incas, which resulted to rooms full of silver and gold found in the Empire. The Spanish also claimed the land after.

Sir Francis Drake

Bartolomeu Diaz

Experiences

  • Sir Francis was born and raised throughout Tavistock & Devonshire, England in 1540.
  • His journey took 3 years, 164 men set out with him and he returned with 59.
  • Queen Elizabeth knighted Drake on his ship for being such a great explorer.

Elizabeth Island located off the tip of South America was founded by Drake. Along the Pacific Coast of America, the Spanish possessions were wealthy and even better easy to rob.

  • Diaz was born in Algarve of 1450, his nationality was Portuguese.
  • The explorer came from Portuguese royalty, and was well educated.
  • His voyage in South Africa lasted a year and 4 months.

Experiences

Diaz was the first European to lead the voyage around the Cape of Good Hope, on the tip of South Africa in 1487. By doing this he opened a route from Europe to Asia.

Hernando Cortez

  • A Spanish explorer originated from Medlin, Spain in 1485.
  • Cortez was sent to law school at the age of 14.
  • He was also the second cousin once removed of Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro.

Experiences

Cortez lead the destruction of the Aztec Empire, and claimed significant areas of Mexico for the Spanish Empire.
