I believe the main conflict of the story is man vs. society. Man being the author and society being the racist time in the 1900's. I believe this because in the text he says "Between me and my dream" i think this means that at one point he could have achieved his goal but through time the racist nature of society stopped him from getting there

I believe his dream may have been to be a writer. This poem may have actually been his first piece of work he did. Maybe nobody would publish his work because of his race, and he had to work harder or wait longer to finally get his work published

My Ideas

Who is Langston Hughes?

I believe this poem is a first person story that the author made after he found his dream.

Langston Hughes became a poet through time of working odd jobs and moving around the country until he got a busboy job in Washington and met a poet. The poet published his work and before he knew it Langston had became a famous poet.

1 February 1902 – 22 May 1967

Main Theme

As I Grew older- Langston Hughes

I believe the main theme to the poem "As I Grew Older" by Langston Hughes is that he had his dreams taken away from him due to racism of the 1900's. From the text there are many clues of this such as "IT was a long time ago" this means it was in the past, most likely when racism was a huge deal in the 1900's. Also he says "I am black" meaning he is African American". Then he says "and then the wall rose" if you read the story and understand the meaning you can infer that the wall is actually racism, the wall is blocking his path to his dreams due to racial segregation. That is what i believe the main theme of the poem to be and reasons why.

Impact on me

Pictures

This story had a pretty big impact on me after i understood the meaning to what it was. This story illustrates what life would have been like as an african american in the 1900's, but this poem does it in a very nice way where you can easily visualize what is happening in the text. This makes the story have a deeper meaning to me and makes it easier to understand.

Here are some pictures i believe to tie into the story and give a visualization of the theme and conflict.

Here is a picture of the author Langston Hughes. As you can tell the picture is in black and white meaning it is an old picture further increases the chances of my inference being correct about the time era.

I chose this image because one of the conflicts the author faces in the poem is racism and so I thought it would fit to be here.

I chose this image of the stone wall to represent the stone wall in the poem that covers the author causing him to not be able to reach his dreams. The stone wall is a reference to racism in the 1900's.
