Importance of conducting a survey

About the Survey

Knowing the backgrounds and experiences of our students will help us be able to spot problematic areas in learning and/or behaviors. A child's background and experience plays a very important part in a child's academic performance, confidence, response to school classroom settings, and how much they are exposed to in reference to what is used in a classroom setting. A survey can help an educator on what strategies to use to promote development in a child without discouraging the child. According to our text "Knowing and understanding our students stimulate more engaging, relevant learning and more highly motivated learners".

Using the responses in these surveys. I created an activity that will be conducted in a 4th grade class.

The purpose of this activity is to have the students share information about themselves with their peers and learn something new about their classmates. For the children to build a sense of comfort with their teacher.

The parents survey will be taken into consideration when creating lessons and/or intervention lessons.

Classroom Management

Activity

Knowing the group dynamic is definitively a major factor in classroom management. Understanding a child's background can also be useful when creating a seating chart. Seating charts should be organized to help those students with special needs and with our behavioral challenged students. Changing our seating chart continuously (once a month) is important to keep our students engaged. Plus they get the opportunity to work with other students in group or partner assignments/activities.

Creating lessons based on students interests (based on students survey answers) will lead to engagement and motivation from the students and a decrease of behavior issues.

Grade level: fourth grade

Time duration: 30 minutes

Objective: Each student will have an opportunity to learn at least one new thing about another student and also share at least one important fact about themselves.

Practice: reading comprehensive and communication skills

Background: Prior to this activity, students will have completed their survey and important facts survey

Activity

  • Teacher will explain and give instructions of the activity.
  • Each child will be seated in their assigned seats listening quietly.
  • Half of the students will be instructed to come up to the white board and select a paper from the board.
  • Students will walk around the class and find their match by asking their peers questions that may let them know what is on their paper.
  • Once students have found their match, they will take a seat on the carpet.
  • Once all students have found their matches, they will share as a whole something interesting about their match (6-10 minutes)
  • After sharing with the class, teacher will re-do the activity again to give an opportunity to those students who didn't get the chance to pick their match.

Parent Involvement

Strategies used

Parent involvement plays a huge role in a child's life. A child's performance is measured by parents attendance at a general meeting, a meeting with a teacher, or a school event, and volunteering or serving on a committee.

Statistics states that students with parents who are involved in their school tend to have fewer behavioral problems and better academic performance.

Parents who are involved in their child's school can monitor the school and classroom activities. Parents can coordinate with the teacher to encourage acceptable classroom behavior and ensure that the child completes schoolwork.

Support at home

Parental Involvement

Some strategies that need to be taken into consideration before conducting the survey are:

  • What is the age group
  • How many students are there
  • setting of the classroom
  • does the survey need to be translated
  • What type of students are there

EL

Special Needs

By obtaining all this information, I can either leave the survey alone or make changes to it.

Parents can provide support at home by:

  • helping their children daily with their homework
  • Have their children read every night
  • Sleep early
  • assure their child is eating breakfast in the morning
  • communicate with their child's teacher

According to NEA (National Education Association)

Parent involvement regardless of family income or background, students with involved parents are more likely to:

  • Earn higher grades and test scores, and enroll in higher-level programs
  • Be promoted, pass their classes, and earn credits
  • Attend school regularly
  • Have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school
