White Oak River Basin

Location

It is tucked between the eastern portions of the Neuse and Cape Fear River Basins. It is mostly composed of coastal and fresh water wetlands that are full of water life of all sorts. Main Tributaries is the New River subbasin which contains the city of Jacksonville and The US Marine Corps Base at Camp Lejuene. Along with the Newport River and The North River.

The White Oak River Basin has more than 20 hiking trails and around 12 biking trails scattered through out the basin. It is teeming with unusual and educational organisms that is guaranteed to make any camping trip to this area a enjoyable and educational outing.

Animal Life

Several endangered animals are found in the white oak riva basin: including the leather back sea turtle, the west indian manatee, a short nosed sturgeon, the logger head sea turtle, the green sea turtle, and the American alligator. It is also the second largest habitat for the extremely endangered red-cock aded woodpecker.

Pollution Concerns

Because of the clean at "Sturgeon City" the white oak river basin is now teeming to the brim with life of all shapes and sizes. Pollution is still a problem do to run off from fertilizes, animal waste, and car toxin, but the citizens of Stugeon City are advancing to a harmless amount of run off by preserving buffers of trees and shrubs along the edges of waterfront property. Such vegetation can help filter harmful substances from runoff.

Human Populations

The city of Jacksonville, has turned the new river into a swimmable and fishable potential camp ground. For almost 40 years, the city's out dated water treatment plant dumped inadequately treated water into he new river. Then, in 1998, the city replaced the facility with a state-of-the-art land-application treatment plant.The water of the New River was quickly graded human safe. The city Jacksonville now has the nickname sturgeon city in homage to the endangered fish that they saved.

Plant Life

The White Oak river basin has the largest population of carnivorous plants including the legally protected Venus fly trap, pitcher plants, bladderworts, and butterworts. It also includes a stunning array of lillies, orchids, and other wild flowers.
