What is a Methodist

Richard Allen was born into slavery on Feburary 14 1760 in Philedelphia Pennsylvania. His parents and his three brothers and sisters were also born into slavery by law at that time. They were sold to a farmer named Stokely Sturgis in Kent County,Delaware.

What Richard did to gain enough money for his freedom was sawing cordwood and driving a wagon during the Revolutionary War. After for a living he became a full time Methodist preacher to blacks and whites, he also served racially mixed congregation of St.George's Methodist church, and joined other ex-slaves and Quaker philanthropists to form a Free African society.

What was Richard well known for?

Some of the biggest challenges for Richard Allen to face were being discriminated to the point of physical voilence. Richard Allen had to find his ways of preaching others and making sure that his peoples were safe from the whites. In 1787 Allen and some others made a formal break with the Methodist Episcopal Church and created the Free African American Society; however, this group gradually moved away from Allen's theological position and became increasingly associated with Quaker ideas, something which displeased Allen greatly and caused him to form a new church altogether.

Stokely Sturgis was more like a father towards his slaves compared to other masters, he told his slaves to attend a methodist society and attend religious classes that were held in the forest at a nearby farm. At seventeen Richard became deeply involved in the methodist religion, making Sturgis moved by the religious beliefs and commitments,so he allowed his slaves to buy freedom for 2,000$ each, which is 50,000$ in today's money.
