"Without a job and with more demands for money from the Thenardiers, Fantine in desperation sold the only thing she had left, herself." (Between pages 62-63 from packet)

How is this character presented as miserable?

  • Fantine is taken advantage of by others greed yet society still blames her
  • Coworkers get her fired
  • Has to earn money for Cosette
  • is again taken advantage of when she mistakenly trusts Thenardier with Cosette
  • led into prostitution and sells her teeth
  • had a good life before her husband died along with her 2 other children
  • left with no money and Cosette
  • looses everything and is desperate to support Cosette

Is this character round? Flat? Dynamic? Static?

Fantine is considered a flat-dynamic character. She is a hard working woman who works so diligently for her daughter. She loses her daughter to a foster family, who demands a lot of money from her. For her to get this money she is forced to sacrifice what she had left. Herself. Her determination to help Cosette causes her to change and becomes distressed.

"I have been a sinner, but when I shall have my child with me, that will mean God has pardoned me."(Between pages 62-63 in packet)

Single mother - in poverty, working to support a family alone

"She dedicated herself to working to save Cosette. She thought of nothing else and was very happy in her endeavors, even when she was forced to live at a lower standard and sacrifice for her daughter." (Between pages 62-63 from packet)

Barterer - selling hair and teeth for money, desperate to get money will sell anything

"Fantine, naively believing them, went to the extent first of shaving her head and selling her hair to meet the Thenardiers' demands because they threatened to throw Cosette out. Later to raise the enormous sums of money they demanded, she sold her two front teeth to a traveling dentist who extracted them in a painful manner." (Between pages 62-63 from packet)
