Activity 1: Navigation Race

Using a trackpad with Tinkercad

Rotation Puzzle!

Zoom:

2. Pinch to zoom.

Focus:

Select an object and press "F".

Use the Rotate and Move tools to arrange the puzzle pieces so that they perfectly match the Elephant design in the top left corner of the workplane.

Place your puzzle in the

center of the frame.

Navigation Race!

  • Use the basic navigation tools of Zoom, Pan, Orbit and Focus to locate each person, animal, or thing.
  • Take a screen shot of each item as you find it.
  • The screen shot must be a direct, closeup view of the object you are trying to find.
  • After finding everything, answer the questions, and fill out the reflection within the Google Doc.

Pedagogical Practice:

Tinkercad: Navigation Race

What are we looking for?

Complete the navigation race with a partner. Answer all reflection questions within the Google Doc "Navigation Race".

To complete:

1. Go to classroom.google.com and open "Navigation Race".

2. Carefully read the instructions, answer all questions within, and provide all screenshots required.

Activity Debrief

Which tool of navigation did you find most useful? Why?

  • Free!

Elvis Has Left the Building

What works about this activity?

How might you change it to better suit your needs?

  • Founded in 2011.

What checks for understanding are there?

How did the Driver and Navigator protocol work for you and your partner?

  • Acquired by Autodesk in 2013.

Take the jumbled mess and fix it! Fixing it means:

  • All letters lie flat on the workplane.
  • They are aligned and spaced properly and should clearly read, "Elvis has left the building"
  • Elvis, even though he looks really good up-side-down, should be oriented right-side-up.

  • Tinkercad Beta - Summer 2016 - No longer Beta as of Summer 2017

Tonight's Agenda:

Summary/Share Out

Prequisite CAD/3D Modeling Skills

Could you see yourself using these materials in your classroom? Why or why not?

1. Introduction to Tinkercad

2. Activities:

  • Navigation Race
  • Rotation Puzzle
  • Elvis Has Left the Building

3. Reflection and Session 2

  • Name/identify various 2D shapes (including polygons).
  • Name/identify various 3D shapes.
  • Break 3D objects into their constituent 2D and 3D shapes.

Also nice to know:

  • Geometric Transformations
  • Dimensioning & Estimation
  • Boolean Operations

For Session 2

Initial skills to build towards proficiency in Tinkercad

Dimensioning/Scaling

Alignment

Kinda, Not Really, Homework! (pick one of the following):

  • Find and complete a online Tinkercad tutorial.
  • Model something!
  • Before you go today: please complete the paper survey!

Selection of Objects

Accurate Movement/Placement of Shapes

Navigation (ie. "camera" perspective)

Manipulating/Sculpting Shapes

Examples of Teaching Materials

Do Now: 3 minutes

Do Now: (3 min)

Do Now: Answer the following in your notes.

Identify all primitives that were used to create the fighter jet. Be sure to label them on the images. Then answer: How does this process help you become a better modeler?

Align & the Workplane Tool

Consider the tools and techniques we've learned in Tinkercad. Write step-by-step instructions explaining how you would put the roof on the house. Then trade instructions with your tablemate, read and compare.

1. What is the difference between duplicate and copy and paste? When might one be more useful than the other?

2. What are the steps for grouping two or more objects?

3. What is the value of grouping? In other words, what does grouping allow us to do?

Are their instructions the same as yours?

Due by the end of our next class (this will take ALL of both periods):

  • Let's Learn Tinkercad Lesson 5: Using the Align Tool and the Workplane helper

To complete:

1. Go to classroom.google.com

2. Open "03.10 Tinkercad Workplane & Align Tool",

3. Follow all instructions and answer all questions within.

Basic Laptop Rules:

1. No headphones - except when watching assigned videos.

2. Only use the laptop assigned to you.

3. Carry the laptop by the base (not the screen).

4. On task - off task behavior results in a 0 for today's participation grade.

Driver & Navigator!

You are completing the work on the computer. And you are required to take turns with your partner. One of you will “drive” while the other “navigates”.

  • The Navigator (aka. the brain): The navigator provides all instructions for the driver (ie. directs, reads, and answers)
  • The Driver (aka. the muscle): The driver follows the navigator's instructions.
