Setting and Plot

Plot:

• Telemachus returns to his house to his mothers joy and the suitors’ dismay.

• Telemachus addresses the men of Ithaca and the suitors and brings the seer, Theoclymenus, into his house.

• Theoclymenus tells a prophecy to Penelope that Odysseus is on his way home.

• Eumaeus leads the beggar, Odysseus, to Odysseus’s house.

• Odysseus begs for food from the suitors and receives some crumbs, crusts, insults, and blows from them.

• Penelope asks to talk to the beggar about Odysseus and he agrees to tell her everything he knows after the suitors have left.

“At her last words Telemachus shook with a lusty sneeze like a thunderclap resounding up and down the halls. The queen was seized with laughter, calling out to Eumaeus winged words: ‘Quickly, go! Bring me this stranger now, face-to-face! You hear how my son sealed all I said with a sneeze? So let death come now with grim finality on these suitors–one and all–not a single man escape his sudden doom! And another thing. Mark my words, I tell you. If I’m convinced that all he says is true, I’ll dress him in shirt and cloak, in handsome clothes.’ ” (page 372 lines 602-612)

Setting: Ithaca – Odysseus’s house, Eumaeus’s hut, and the walkways of Ithaca

“And now at last the king and loyal swineherd, drawing near the palace, halted just outside as the lyre’s rippling music drifted around them–Phemius, striking up a song for assembled guests– and the master seized his servant’s hand, exclaiming, ‘Friend, what a noble house! Odysseus’ house, it must be! No mistaking it–you could tell it among a townful, look. One building linked to the next, and the courtyard wall is finished off with a fine coping, the double doors are battle-proof–no man could break them down! I can tell a crowd is feasting there in force–smell the savor of roasts…the ringing lyre, listen, the lyre that god has made the friend of feasts.’ ” (page 362-363 line 285-297).

Odysseus' Characteristics

pg 362 line 256. Odysseus was just harshly attacked in his own property, the normal reaction anyone would do is attack the person who tried to hurt us. However Odysseus knows that if he does this, that will blow his cover and he will most likely be killed. The trait odysseus shows here is paitence and this reflects on the greek culture being very patient and tolerant. with others(Odysseus had to tolerate the suitor)

Questions

1. What was Theoclymenus' prophecy? (page 359 line 168-176)

2. What did Penelope ask Telemachus and how did he respond at first? (p 355 l 40-57)

3. How do the suitors treat the beggar (Odysseus)? (p361 l 236-255)

4. Who is Antinous? What does he say about Odysseus and who defends Odysseus? (p366 l 412-445)

Quotes

1. Odysseus shows his wise characteristic after he wins the fight. Instead of going straight to his wife after the fight, he thinks of the trouble it might cause if other suitors saw him go into her room, and tells her to wait until sun down. Pg 372: line 624 – 636

2. Odysseus has been able to lose control several times. One that has been well described is the stabbing of polyphemus. However, this chapter shows another side of him which is controlled. This is shown on pg 361 – 362 : line 254 – 260. Even though he had the raging thoughts, he was able to show control by not hurting the man insulting him.

3. Another loving side of Odysseus is revealed in this chapter like that of when he couldn’t kill his son because he loved him too much, therefore he went to war. This time he sees his old dog that he had missed for years, and can’t help but try to help him by talking to the Sheppard about him on pg 364 : line 343 – 352. Him wiping away a tear and complimenting him in front of the Sheppard to try and help him show his love and care for his long separated dog.

4. Insight on what would later happen in the story or plot was given when Athena told Odysseus/the beggar to go and ask for food and crusts from the suitors to test their innocence. Even though they might prove innocent, she was still going to kill everyone which showed that’s later all the suitors died. This was proven in the quote on page 366 : lines 396 – 399
