It takes a long time to make a facial reconstruction.
Lots of unknown people have become known thanks to archaeologists.
Doug Owlsley says tht there is a deeper meaning to his work.
Facial reconstructions are very important to an archaeologist's understanding of history. Joanna Hughes made the original mold. Without the original mold, Studio EIS couldn't have finished the reconstruction. StudioEIS made the plaster mold and fleshed out the features. StudioEIS was a pivotal stage in the process of making thereconstruction, due to their large part in figuring out what HK7 looked like. HK7's facial reconstruction was the first one made of an African American in colonial times. This is important, since no other facial reconstructions of African American colonists were ever made. The author noted that "two seemingly different disciplines- science and art- can complement each other. The science of forensic anthropology and the art of sculpting came together to make a facial reconstruction. Tha author also noted that you can "come face to face with people who lived long ago." We've learned so much about them, and have even seen what they look like, so it's almost like we've heard their stories from them, and not records and bone. As you can see, the reconstruction was an integral part in learning about the colonists.
Archaeologists are moved by a deeper meaning than just looking at bones. St. Mary's City was forgotten, but not forever. Archaeologists rediscovered the city, along with skeletons and other things. One archaeologist said that "studying many skeletons can confirm the historical record." For example, the arrowhead found in one skeleton's leg confirmed Native American attacks. Medicine and forensic anthropology have both advanced. For example, the starchy diet of corn the colonists ate led to tooth loss, something medical doctors learned after learning about the bones. The bones can show many things, like physical labor. Scientists are able to figure out what colonists were slaves, by studying the wear of the bones. One archaeologist noted that the "information we gather is their legacy." The bones tell a life story, the legacy of the colonists. As you can see, the archaeologists believe they are doing more than studying bones.
