We Beat The Streets Prezi

Welcome to our We Beat the Streets Prezi. Our Prezi will take you through the vocabulary of the book, blog posts answering questions related to the story, and the people who helped to make this story possible. (RC) I wanted to read this story because it was supposed to be more of a challenge due to the fact that it followed multiple main characters. While the prospect of this is natuarally intimidating, the three doctors each have their own distinct personallity to make telling them apart quite easy.

Vocabulary #2

There were a number of people who were an inspiration to the three doctors on their journey. The three doctors themselves were constantly an inspiration for the other two and helped to guide them with positive peer pressure. Multiple times throughout the novel they mention how none of them would have succeeded on their own. All of the doctors grew up in Newmark New Jersey and had to face many challenges such as school, drugs, and police violence. All needed help with medical injuries or imperfections early in life helping to spark their medical interests. Another major inspiration brought up among all of the doctors was Carla Dickson. Carla had wanted the best for all of the doctors in her school and was the first teacher who was really able to motivate the three doctors into doing their best. As such Carla was a huge part of why the three doctors are where they are today.

1. The purpose of "We Beat the Streets" was to address the issue of anybody being able to do good things even where they grow up and the history they had. This story showed that no matter how bad people are, they can rebound from their troubles and give back to their community.

Eetched- cut or carve (a text or design) on a surface

Pact- a formal agreement between individuals or parties.

The writing was not written in a way to impact the reader's enjoyment and understanding. I really enjoyed the language because it switched between the three people to give a story that is spaced between each person's sotry at the time. This story was a very exciting subject and it did lose my interest in the beginning because it was just the start of the journey. I fell asleep because there wasn't any enjoyment in it. The was no variance of language and that's what caused me to lose interest. Unfamiliar terms were explained as well as the concepts. There was a very clear understanding for these concepts that nobody had an idea for. The visuals reinforced the subject matter by telling you the ways of what the doctors had gone through whether it was the beating up or the stealing. It was kind of like a second witness for what the doctors did. It was very helpful because we wouldn't know what they had planned or did.

Ridicule- subject (someone or something) to contemptuous and dismissive language or behavior.

Inquisitive- curious or inquiring

Inadequacy- Inability to deal with a situation or with life

Aimlessness- without purpose or direction

Unconciously- without realizing or being aware of one's actions.

Dysfunctional- deviating from the norms of social behavior in a way regarded as bad.

5. All three of the doctors show perseverance in their story by becoming doctors in their circumstances. All had early encounter with drugs, theft and or violence which could have easily, along with the negative mentality of most citizens, absorb the doctors into a pitiful life long before high school ended. Sampson even said that "no one from our neighborhood ever makes it out. You are either gunned down, or arrested, or get some crazy disease. Everyone fails." By continuing to push through and beyond both high school and college, all three doctors showcased perseverance.

6. Preconceived notions of Rameck had changed throughout the novel. Rameck was much more violent then innitially thought, and was almost arrested many times. One such incident was when Rameck attacked another student and noted that "the boy's neck bent in an odd way and his body felt limp" after the assult. All of the doctors seemed simillar before reading, however George was more determined than the others and Rameck had ended up being much more violent then innitially thought.

Alluring- powerfully and mysteriously attractive or fascinating; seductive

7. If George was a superhero, he would be Superman because he would beat both Godzilla and King Kong. When George had first gone to the dentist at eleven years old, he asked the dentist if he would be King Kong or Godzilla when compared to a doctor if Godzilla would beat King Kong. His dentist informed George of how dentists were just a type of doctor, and then jokingly replied " But me, I'm like Superman-I'd beat both Godzilla and King Kong" to impress George. Years later, George was inspired by his dentist to be just like him in profession and power. If George's dentist was a knoble hero who inpired others to do good, then George too, would be Superman.

8. The moral that the three doctors aim to teach is that everyone can make their dreams come true if they work hard enough. All three of the doctors had terrible living conditions and were almost swallowed up by the violence and dispair of the streets they lived on. By sticking together and continuing to work hard, the doctors made my dream come true.

This moral will not change my life at all. I try my best at what I do already, however I will continue to avoid dreaming big. I prefer to be realistic and while I know that this story is true, I prefer to make more realistic goals, and one story isn't going to change that. I know the three doctors love to mention how "this is a true story, we are real people" and that is great, butI will not be changed as an individual.

2. The main characters dealt with adversity when they got into trouble by realizing the horrors of jail. After seeing the horrors, they realized that they couldn't stay in the prison and agreed that they would try not to get into trouble again.

The most powerful influence on Rameck's life was the people he hung out with on the streets. He got in big trouble when hanging out with the people. He punched one person per peer pressure, "Rameck and his friends began beating the man (Draper 102)." He beat people up because his friends did it and therefore got him in jail. This made him become a good person and then he changed his life pathway.
