  • How do you describe multiple themes in myths and epic tales and analyze how place and time influence the theme?

  • How do you write responses to literary texts that demonstrate the writing skills for multi-paragraph essays and provide evidence to support their ideas using quotations where appropriate?

Characters

Heroes, Gods, Stories, and Truths

  • Usually non-human
  • Gods
  • Goddesses
  • Supernatural Beings

Setting

  • Occurs in ancient times or prior to the time of the myth being recorded.
  • Set in a world similar to our own, but teeming with creatures and areas we do not have.

DISCLAIMER:

Mythology is NOT just Greek, Roman, or Ancient!!!

"We Are Our

Narratives"

basic pattern/plot that heroes in mythology (and other forms of literature) follow.

Myths often contain events that bend or break natural laws. This is done to highlight the supernatural-ness of the mythical world.

Dualities

(Opposites)

Myths deal with opposing forces.

For example:

  • Good vs. Evil
  • Night vs. Day

What is mythology???

Mythos: Story

Logos: word, speech

A myth is a story that is part of a larger tradition of meaning and meaning-making. They are often culturally-specific and orally-transferred.

Myths try to validate or explain social customs or traditions. These myths have some kind of moral or lesson.

Myths try to answer those big questions that we have difficulty answering... Why do the seasons change? Why do we die? How did the world come to be?
