Light = Additive

Depends on illuminance and reflectivity

  • hue
  • saturation
  • value

Additive

The mixtures of all colors in light creates white

Subtractive

The mixtures of all colors of paint creates black

Color

Psychological Properties of Color:

  • color temperature

Saturation = intensity of color

(brilliance or dullness)

Hue = color

the definition of its wavelength (place on the color spectrum)

Theory

Psychological reaction to color. Red is warm, blue is cool.

Color temperature measured in degrees Kelvin (K)

Daylight = 6500 K

Tungsten = 3200 K

In dim light, blue looks brighter than red, and in full daylight, red looks brighter than blue.

The Purkinje effect fools the brain into perceiving moonlight as slightly bluish, even though it is reflected sunlight.

Color Space: Cont.

Different devices will be capable of capturing or displaying different amounts of all producible colors. (Saturation & Luminance)

The process of converting from one device's color space to another is called gamut mapping.

Primary Colors = hues from which all other colors can be mixed

Secondary Colors = hues that come from two primary colors

RED + BLUE = Magenta

BLUE + GREEN = Cyan

RED + GREEN = Yellow

Rec. 709 (same as sRGB) - international standard color response of high-def television. Somewhat limited.

DCI-P3 - new standard for digital cinema projection. Close to the full gamut of color film (more greens and reds than Rec. 709)

CIE XYZ - device-independent, tries to encompass all the colors perceivable by the human eye

Rec 2020 - contains 75% of all visible colors, will be in future UHDTV and HDR Cinema

Log vs Rec 709:

Log is flat with more information (preserves dynamic range)

Rec 709 is higher contrast, bakes away some data

Types of Log: S-log 2&3 (Sony), LogC (Arri), Canon Log, V-log (Panasonic), Red Logfilm, Blackmagic Log

RGB color model is used for video, or any medium that projects the color

CMYK color model is used for print media
