Bellerophon and the Chimera

Bellerophon was a Greek warrior, who was exiled for the Murder of his brother. Bellerophon was sent to King Proteus for cleansing of his crimes.

the Queen fancied the warrior and tried to seduce him. She failed, and said that Bellerophon had tried to rape her.

bELLEROPHON WAS SENT TO THE kING iOBATES, WHO WAS THE FATHER OF THE QUEEN. bELLEROPHON aLSO BROUGHT SCROLLS ORDERING HIS DEATH. tHE KING, BEING A GOOD MAN, DIDN'T KILL bELLEROPHON, BUT INSTEAD ORDERED HIM TO KILL THE UNCONQUERABLE cHIMERA.

The great seer, polyeidos of lycia, told bellerophon to sleep in the temple of athena. There bellerophon was visited by the goddess in a dream where she gave him a golden bridle to capture pegasus, the winged horse.

Bellerophon returned to Corinth, the city of his birth, and went to the spring of Pyrene where pegasus drank. He sadled the horse and rode of to battle the Chimera.

The Chimera was a beast with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and a serpent for a tail. The beast breathed fire and there was its weakness. Riding upon Pegasus, Bellerophon threw a block of lead into the mouth of the beast. When it breathed its fire, the lead melted and sealed its throat. The monster choked and died.

Bellerophon made good on his promise to King Iobates, though the king sent him on further quests to expunge his supposed crime. He and Pegasus fought the Solymi and Amazons, fierce warrior people.

Finally, Bellerophon attempted to Ascend to Mt. olympus but was struck down by zues for his vanity. He walked the rest of his days as a blind cripple lamenting his misfortune.

Bellerophon is the symbol of the British first Para unit. They use his symbol as the first flighted warrior.
