Lit. 3x3:

Woman desires love

Lovers forever lost

She establishes identity

A woman named Olenka searches for a relationship in which she can define her identity through. She invested her time and energy into all three of her husbands, but still identified herself and her opinions through their expectations and desires. Finally, at the end of the story, she begins to develop her own identity forming personal opinions about the world when she invests her time & energy into a young boy, who is practically her nephew, who teaches her about herself.

Chekhov was born in Russia in 1860. He wanted to study medicine, but needed more money, so he began writing short stories. His father was a shoemaker & his grandfather had been a serf. He is known for contributing to the creation of the short story.

Point of View

Symbol:

- " Olenka's house grew dingy, the roof got nasty, the shed sank on one side, and the whole yard was overgrown with docks and stinging nettles. Olenka herself had grown plain and elderly; in summer she sat in the porch, and her soul, as before, was empty and dreary and full of bitterness" (219).

Imagery:

- "Dark rainclounds were gathering from the east, and bringing from time to time a breath of moisture in the air" (212).

Simile:

- "... she compared herself with the hens, who are awake all night and uneasy..." (214).

Repetition:

- Chekhov uses "darling" multiple times as a name for many characters

The Point of view is 3rd person omniscient.

"She was always fond of someone, and could not exist without loving".(213)

Supporting Quotes:

"It was evident that she could not live a year without some attachment...".(218)

I liked this one, however keynote captures overall theme.

"She wanted a love that would absorb her whole being, her whole soul and reason - that would give her ideas and an object in life, and would warm her old blood". (219)

"The Darling" referrers to the main character, Olenka. That is the name that everyone calls her. She identifies herself by people's reactions and thoughts of her, which in this case, is the title, The Darling. Almost everyone seems to be infatuated with her and she is referred to as "The Darling".

Husband #2: (Pustovalov) a timber merchant who desires to be in a relationship and to be happy. Dynamic character, round

The story is not specific about the time and place, however it appears to be in Russia during the 1800's. Russia is mentioned as a place nearby and the main characters names' seem to be Russian as well as the names of the places. Also, Chekhov has a Russian influence.

Sasha: (young boy) a boy whose parents do not really look after him. Needs a mother role-model. Someone to look up to who will look after him. Dynamic character, flat
