Background and Origin

Significance to early modern Japanese culture

Martial arts in Japan date back in history to medieval times when it was a period of fighting, struggling and war. People needed to prepare for combat and protection and martial arts were mainly practiced by the Samurai class. A samurai was gifted with this art, as it could save him/her from enemy attack.

Mongolian tribesmen introduced the Chinese to violent skull-bashing wrestling, and consequently they indirectly introduced the Koreans and Japanese to it.

In China, the wrestling was called shang pu, and in Korea, it was called tae sang bak. Tae sang bak is also a synonym for the Korean wrestling form known as ssireum, which is pronounced as sumo in Japanese.

The martial arts of Japan have a wide range starting from empty hand-to-hand techniques, to fighting with several weapons.

Karate

Judo

Karate means "empty handed." This form of fighting originated on the Japanese island of Okinawa. Karate emphasizes offensive and defensive moves, and avoids grappling and wrestling. Students are taught how to deliver quick, powerful blows with nearly every part of the body, including dangerous kicks with the legs.

Learning martial arts was very important to early modern Japanese culture because it was practiced by the samurai (warriors of Japan). Samurai were also very honourable people and were very lucky to be gifted with this art.

Japanese martial arts have a very strong tradition, code of honour and behaviour. One is rarely taught the fighting aspects of the art without traditions and codes which come along with it. It trains them in having a correct state of mind, discipline and humbleness.

.

Judo means "gentle way" in Japanese and was developed as an educational tool and originated from older forms of jujitsu that was practiced by samurai masters. Judo emphasizes self defensive moves such as holds and grappling, and teaches students how to disarm attackers by applying pressure to specific sensitive points on the body. Judo is performed competitively in matches.

How is the art celebrated and used in modern societies

Bibliography

Many martial arts from China, Japan and Korea are practiced today and are taught in specific styles or systems.

In Australia many forms and styles of martial arts are practiced and taught at schools, academies and as private businesses. Competitions are held all around the world for people skilled in these arts to participate in fighting one another for a prize. For example, Judo is one of the sports in the upcoming Rio Olympics.
