I'm first going to talk about impressionism, and some of the artists that fall into the category of impressionism.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Dali is often known as the father of surrealism. He was a Spanish painter known for his eccentric behavior.

The Luncheon of the Boating Party

Max Ernst Showing A Young Girl the Head of His Father

Impressionism is an art movement that took place in the late 1860's to the early 1900's. It's an art style that can be identified by the choppy but loose brush strokes, thick paint used, and the exagerated colors.

The Ubu Imperator was painted in 1923. It hangs in the Georges Pompidou Centre.

Kahlo is a painter from Mexico. She is most known for her self portraits.

This piece is part of a private collection. It was painted in 1937.

The Luncheon of the Boating Party was painted between 1880 to 1881. It's currently located in the Phillips Collection and is worth roughly $125,000

Magritte is a Belgian artist known for his witty and thought provoking pieces.

The Wounded Deer was completed in 1946. It is currently part of a private collection in Houston, Texas.

For my gallery I chose to compare the two art movements, surrealism and impressionism. These two movements influence my art style heavily.

The Lovers

Singer With the Glove

Singer With the Glove was painted in 1878 and is located in the Fogg Art Museum.

Monet was a French painter who is often considered the founder of Impressionism. He is also given credit for naming impressionism after his painting Impression, Sunrise became popular.

The lovers is a painting that currently hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. It was painted in 1928.

Differences

Camille Pissarro

Vincent van Gogh

Similarities

Pissarro is a Danish painter who's work is similar to that of Monet. He also specialized in Post-Impressionism

The two movements are almost opposites. Surrealism causes a viewer to be unnerved. Impressionism often leaves a viewer with a sense of peace. Surrealism is smooth, while impressionism has a loose, choppy style with thick globs of paint. Surrealism deals with something that cannot be seen in this world, and impressionism is often a landscape, or at least a subject that is physical.

Starry Night

Vincent might be the most popular impressionist. He's a Dutch Post-Impressionist. His most popular subjects are portraits, still lifesof sunflowers, and landscapes.

Starry Night is probably Van Gogh's most famous work. The painting was done in 1889 and is in the Museum of Modern Art. It's worth $80 million.

Wheatfields With Crows

This painting is often rumored to be Van Gogh's last painting, but records aren't fully clear. This was painted in 1890 and is located in the Van Gogh Museum.

Boulevard Montmartre

(Night Effect)

This was one of Pissarro's Boulevard paintings. It was painted in 1897. It's located in the National Gallery in London.

The two movements are vastly different. The main thing they have in common is it allows the artist to show the world what he or she sees or feels. Inpressionists do this through the use of dramatic colors, while surrealists allow their subconsious to lead their hands.
