The Chicago Police Department was going through a lot of changes in the 80's

  • Women entered the workforce
  • 1980s - Operation Greylord was a federal-level investigation, followed by various corruption trials, targeting the Cook County, Illinois, judiciary (the Chicago jurisdiction).
  • 1980s - "Marquette Ten": 10 police officers in Chicago's Marquette District were convicted of taking bribes from drug dealers.
  • Feb. 10, 1983, Japanese, Chicago mob boss Ken Eto survived a Mafia hit and, then, testified in court against the Chicago Outfit, sending more than a dozen fellow mobsters and corrupt cops to prison.

Timeline Continued

  • 1988, 16 people got arrested after police held
  • drug raids at 5 Chicago Housing Authority housing developments. 73 officers went to the buildings suspecting drug dealing. The homes were, Henry Horner, Altgeld Gardens, Rockwell Gardens, Cabrini-Green, and ALBA.
  • 1980s, Police scandals were wild. One officer in particular, Jon Burge (commander), was responsible for torturing 60 or more black men throughout the 80's.

The Police Department was necessary to Chicago for many reasons in the 80's.

- With the public housing, people were more likely to join a gang than finish high school.

- Drugs were getting out of control and there was the possibility of a cocaine outbreak.

- And without police the city would be over run with rival gang wars and drug dealings that eventually no part of the city would be safe.

Police were all-together trying to help the innocent people in any and every way possible. The impact they had on the city was increasing as the "number of bullets fired by police dropped considerably in the 1980s."-Encyclopedia of Chicago.

The Chicago Police today are a group of...

-Role models made from all races and genders

-People that are willing to put their lives on the line for their city.

-People that do not shy away from helping those in poverty because it may be dangerous at times.

-And commendable people that are willing to help the young before they continue or start to lead their lives the wrong way, and/or end up in jail.
