Cold War: Turkey

What is Turkey?

Turkey was formed when the Ottoman Empire was disbanded after World War I. It is the remnants of the Ottoman Empire

Turkey is predominantly Muslim.

Leading up to World War II

Government

Turkey had a single-party republic.

Turkey was led by President Ismet Inönü from 1938-1950

Foreign Affairs

Turkey was isolated by most of Europe.

Economy

Turkey used a policy of etatism and relied on commercial agriculture to support most of their economy.

Turkey was hit very hard by the Great Depression.

It never fully recovered from the Depression by the start of the war in 1939.

During the War

Turkey's main goal during WWII was to remain neutral. This only caused their economy to become worse.

Post-War

Turkey almost immediately evolved into a multi-party republic in 1945.

Relations with other countries

Turkey tried to make friendly arrangements with the Soviets, but failed.

In 1947, the United States issued the Truman Doctrine.

In the Cold War

Turkey contributed troops to the Korean War from 1950-1953 for the US.

Turkey joined NATO in 1952.

Turkey was a founding member of the Central Treaty Organization collective defense pact in 1955.

The European Union

Turkey has been an associate member of the European Union since 1963.

Turkey has been wanting to enter the European Union for a while.

Turkey has made many reforms in the past decade to meet the criteria of the European Union. Negotiations for Turkey's accession into the union began in 2004.

Economically

Economically, Turkey hasn't recovered since the Cold War.

Ties with the US

Turkey's ties with the United States have been damaged by the US War in Iraq.
