Sharks have survived for over 200 million years in the ocean.

Megalodon was a type of shark believed to have lived between 25 and 1.6 million years ago. According to it's fossilized teeth (which were as big as a human hand), it was atleast 40 feet long.

The skin is covered all over the body with denticles (tiny teeth) that are slanted, directing the flow of water around the shark's body and reducing drag.

These denticles are v-shaped ridges that are at a specific angle to allow the shark to swim efficiently.

A shark's rough skin allows them to swim through water with ten percent less energy than a fish with smooth skin.

The function of denticles has been achieved in the Speedo Fastskin II swimsuit using a knitted super-stretch fabric (flexskin) that has an artificial denticle surface print on key parts of the swimsuit.

These innovational swimsuits are specially seamed to help muscles work together and efficiently.

The swimsuit is specially shaped to be skin tight with no excess fabric in order to increase productivity.

These swimsuits save energy and reduce drag for the competitor by up to four percent.

Many atheletes were concerned on the loss of the "feel of the water" on the inner forearm for the Fastskin II.

However, Speedo fixed this problem by incorporating gripper fabric in this problem area. By doing this, it increased the feel for the water through more friction.

These sharkskin inspired swimsuits were a controversy and sparked a debate over sport versus technology.

This debate ended up in a ban of these swimsuits due to their advantages after the 2008 Bejing Olympics. The new rules, which took effect in 2010 said only relatively minimal coverage swimsuits will be allowed.

There are many models including:

  • Full body
  • Shorts
  • Pants
  • Knee length
  • Racerback
