Early Life

Salem Witchcraft trials

  • Left island of Barbados in 1680 for Boston
  • Married Elizabeth Elridge
  • Had three children Thomas, Betty, and Susannah
  • Supported his business with money from Barbados
  • Became minister of Salem village in 1689
  • Community complained about Parris is 1691, because he preached about Salem being taken by Satan
  • Lived in Barbados
  • Family was moderately wealthy and religiously nonconformist
  • Sent to Massachusetts to study at Harvard
  • Returned to Barbados when his father died.
  • Leased out sugar plantation.
  • Bought two slaves, one named Tituba
  • In 1691 daughter and niece begin fortune-telling and other non-Puritan activites, probably influenced by Tituba
  • Betty develops symptoms such as pinching, prickling and choking sensations
  • Dr. William Grigs suggests witchcraft as cause
  • Parris beats Tituba into confessing witchcraft
  • Church charges him for his part in the witchcraft trials
  • Leaves Salem in 1697, dies in 1720
