Invention of Rugby

Original Rules

  • 20 players per team
  • when the ball is touched down in the try zone the team can then make an attempt to kick for a point
  • written law No. 20 "a game is drawn after five days but, after three if no goal has been kicked
  • during the game no player can be replaced in the event of an accident
  • South Africa is one of the top 5 teams in the world, rugby was first introduced to them by british troops
  • The origin of half time came when the school captain stopped the game 40 minutes in to say that it wasn’t fair that his team had to play against the wind the whole time. The teams agreed to switch sides and half time was born. The 1926 rules were the first to mention 40 minute halves.
  • William Webb Ellis is usually credited with the invention of rugby in 1823 at Rugby School. The story is that he caught the ball during a soccer game and ran toward to the goal. However there is no evidence to support this story. In 1845 the first rules of rugby were written at Rugby School by the students. Older students then brought the game to their universities where some rules were altered.
  • Cambridge University is credited with creating the first rugby team.
  • The first international game was played between England and Scotland in 1871.

Energy Systems

Rugby in Canada

  • All energy systems are used during play in rugby.
  • since there is more intense play at times different systems are needed

Media

Canada's Success

In Canada rugby isn't covered much by the media but in other countries where the sport is more popular it is broadcast like hockey is here in Canada

  • Rugby was first brought to Canada by immigrants in the 1860's and was mostly played on the coasts, however the first documented game was played in Montreal, Quebec in 1864
  • In the same year Trinity College (Toronto, Ontario) published the first set of rules for the game in Canada
  • during the first world war only Nova Scotia and British Colombia had enough players to arrange matches
  • The Rugby Union of Canada was introduced in the 1930's but was then changed to Rugby Canada in 1947
  • Rugby is now played in all 10 provinces by both men and women
  • Canada hasn't had to much success in international play
  • In men's rugby Canada has only ever made it as far as the quarter finals in the world cup
  • in the women's world cup Canada has placed 3rd once and 4th multiple times
