What media companies do we already know about?
List 3 media companies.
These organisations will fall into different categories, 3 we shall focus on are
Private
Public
Conglomerates
Public Service Broadcasters are responsible for serving the public interest. The most prolific institution for the UK is of course the BBC.
From gov.com...
"The UK has 5 public service television broadcasters. These broadcasters receive benefits like the licence fee (in the case of the BBC), guaranteed access to the spectrum (or section of the airwaves) they need for broadcasting, and prominence on TV electronic programme guides. In return they commit to providing services that give a benefit to the public, like news, local programming or cultural content."
The BBC is a prime example of a public service broadcaster; the BBC has a number of responsibilities and requirements that it most uphold.
In pairs create a table measuring 2 by 7; your first column should outline what the purpose of the BBC is and the second column should be examples of where this is evident in the BBC.
Private companies are responsible for making a profit and generating revenue.
Unlike public companies that have a duty to serve us, we have no control or input over private companies output. They are commercial companies that can pick and chose what they want to show as long it is deemed popular by the audience.
A conglomerate is an organisation that purchases other organisations in order to make the purchasing company more diverse and ultimately larger. Conglomerates are usually part of an international media organisation.
Conglomerates are similar to private companies in that they are driven by making profits. They have a global presence, create mainstream products and use synergy in order to gain these profits.
Horizontal integration is the process in which a conglomerate owns and operates different types of companies. Disney is again an example of a company that operates horizontal.
What sectors of the media industry do Disney own?
Disney owns a number of different companies which bare the Disney brand.
Vertical integration is where a company will own the different processes of a production including it's production and distribution.
Apple Inc is an example of vertical integration...
Apple owns and operates the different parts of it's own production, marketing and distribution.
Although we have focused on specific aspects of integration with these companies, they do not exclusively function this way. Disney has developed vertically (owning distribution for example) as has Apple horizontally (buying out companies in different sectors, "Beats by Dre").
There are benefits to horizontal and vertical integration, in pairs discuss and then complete the table on itslearning into the benefits of each for media organisations.
