- Forman climbed onto a fire truck and snapped the picture just as Diana Bryant and a daughter (Tiara Jones) fell to the ground

- Their fire escape had collapsed just as a fireman was trying to get the truck’s ladder into position

- Diana Bryant broke the fall for her daughter (who survived) but Diana died from her injuries

- Boston Herald published picture on front page the next morning, and then it was published in hundreds of other newspapers

- Image in the newspaper sparked an uproar

-most immediate reaction was negative (many people thought that it was cruel for Forman to have used this image to get money)

-However, the photograph has potentially saved thousands of lives since this incident because of tougher fire safety regulation that were imposed after this horrible event occured

30 Years Later...

In a 2005 BBC News interview, Forman said,” I was never bothered by the controversy. When you think about it, I don’t think it was that horrific. The woman at the time was not deceased; we didn’t show a dead person on the front page. She did die, which is a horrible thing...

My photograph prompted people to go out and check their fire escapes and ushered in a law that meant that the owner of the property is responsible for fire-escape safety. It was also used in many fire-safety pamphlets for many years."
