Leon taught deaf children to read, write and sign their name. This meant that they could own land!

an Italian mathematician, physician, astrologer and philosopher that said that deaf people were capable of using their minds.

He argued for the importance of teaching them, and was one of the first to state that deaf people could learn to read and write without learning how to speak first.

At this school,

they could use signs

and natural gestures

until oral language

was established first.

He set up schools in Virginia, Boston and New York, but they all failed.

Due to alcohol and gambling problems, he returned to England.

This school was first established in San Francisco, California

In 1867, the school then moved to Berkeley, CA. Later, in the 1980's it moved to Fremont where it is currently located.

The National Deaf Mute College was established

in 1864.

Lincoln signed the charter

to open this school.

In March of 1988,

the deaf students and faculty

of Gallaudet University

protested against their hearing

president.They wanted their

first deaf president.

After a week of protesting,

she stepped down and

I. King Jordan became her

replacement.

When the French Revolution broke out,

Sicard was imprisoned.

During this time, he wrote a dictionary of

signs in his book "Theory of Signs."

In 1776 he sent deaf son and two deaf daughters to Scotland to learn to speak.
