Safewards is an evidence-based
model of care developed in the UK.
It focuses on minimizing episodes of
conflict and containment within mental
health settings by minimizing potential
triggers called “flashpoints”.
In 2013 the Victorian Government
committed $1million to fund a Safewards implementation and evaluation project
across the state.
18 inpatient units across 7 Area Mental Health services are participating in this project.
The Power of Words
The Safewards rollout at LRH commenced in December 2014,
with the official project commencing
in March 2015.
Since the project commenced
MHPDU staff have delivered
50+ education sessions on all
10 Safewards interventions
to clinical staff.
Flynn and SECU are the units
involved in the project.
