GENDER

"representation in the media"

Representations of women in the media have developed and changed with time to reflect the cultural and sociological changes in society. However, female stereotypes continue to appear in some media texts.

Many representations of women concentrate on sexuality and emotions. Others focus on their relationships with their children or romantic partners.

"What examples of female characters can you think of that challenges these stereotypes?"

How are certain sections of society are represented in a positive way, or are they "stereotyped?

REPRESENTATION

The Theory of Representation

Research Stuart Hall’s theory about representation:

Hall challenged the theory about mass communication because we are an ACTIVE and not a PASSIVE audience.

Hall says that 1: the meaning is not fixed or determined by the sender.

2: The message is never transparent.

3: The audience is not a passive recipient of meaning.

"Representation is the portrayal of someone or something in a particular way."

REPRESENTATION

ADVERTISING

Examine HOW & WHY media producers use representation.

"Advertisements that show men failing at simple household tasks and women left to clean up are set to be banned by the UK advertising watchdog.

The Advertising Standards Authority will crack down on ads that feature stereotypical gender roles."

ADVERTISING

Many media producers, try to challenge and change our perceptions by creating media that encourages people to break away from stereotypes. But many media producers use stereotypes to their advantage.

TASK

On Word or Powerpoint, research the same product or brand over the decades. (TV & Poster) How has it changed over the years?

You can think about how the actors are represented (race, sex, class, age) and the main advertising message.

Prepare to share your findings with the group towards the end of the lesson.

Save your work & you can use it for your Contextual Sketchbook

Why do media producers sometimes represent people or things in a certain way?
