Comparison Clues

WORD ANALYSIS

Explanation Clue

Comparison clues show that two or more things are alike. Words like similar, as well as, both and likewise show that comparison is possible. Look at this example:

Washing windows is a tedious job. Similarly, cleaning the oven is very boring.

The word similarly shows that there is something the same in the two sentences. Washing windows and cleaning the oven are different, so the similarity must be in the description. We can guess that tedious and boring must have similar meanings.

Explanation clue is a sentence with an unfamiliar word, that is followed by an explanation in which a familiar word or group of words is used.

Synonym Clues

Example:

Katie appeared infallible in math class because she had never gotten a problem wrong.

Synonym clues are used near unfamiliar words to help you understand what they mean.

Example:

  • Reducing cholesterol has a number of beneficial results.
  • One positive outcome is reducing the risk of heart disease.

Example Clue

Example clue is a sentence that has an unfamiliar word, followed by an example,in which the familiar word is used.

example:

  • In college, you can choose courses from a broad range of academic disciplines, such as history,economics,mathematics, and psychology .

Contrast Clues

Contrast clues are hints that the writer gives to help define a difficult or unusual word. It provides the opposite meaning of an unknown word, thus hinting to the true meaning of that word.

Example:

Miriah and Tatum thought they were being discreet when they saw each other outside of the workplace; however the entire office knew that they were secretly dating.

When we read, we often come upon unfamiliar words.

How do we figure out the meaning? Looking the word up in the dictionary is one way, but this may not always be convenient or possible .

One way to determine the meaning of a word is context clues.

There are 5 kinds of context clues which are:

1.Synonym Clue

2.Comparison Clue

3.Contrast Clue

4.Explanation Clue

5.Example Clue
