Classification and Screening

Hearing impairments are categorized by their type, their severity, and the age of onset (before or after language is acquired). A hearing impairment may exist in only one ear or in both ears. There are three main types of hearing impairments, conductive hearing impairment and sensorineural hearing impairment and a combination of the two called mixed hearing loss. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that children should have their hearing tested several times throughout their schooling

Deafness before language & after

Causes

-Immunization

against, Rubella, Influenza and pneumonia

-Avoid excessive noise exposure

-Children between the ages 2-3 who become deaf prior to acquiring a language have a severe impairment on their speech. Cochlear implants allow prelingually deaf children to acquire an oral language if it is implanted within the first 2-4 years.

-Post-lingual deafness is hearing impairment that is sustained after the acquisition of language, which can occur as a result of disease, trauma, or as a side-effect of a medicine. Those who go deaf later in life suffer alternative obstacles such as remaining independent.

Defining Deafness

Deafness can be defined as an individual who cannot hear any sound even if it is amplified. In profound deafness even the loudest sounds produced by an audiometer cannot be heard by the individual.

Understanding Hearing Loss

Deaf Community & Schooling

The majority of the Deaf community communicate via A.S.L. Many member of Deaf communities oppose technological assistance in hearing. 1 in 1000 people are considered deaf, usually deaf students attend specialized schools.Deaf students do have the option of being in inclusion classes or being home schooled.

Hearing Loss exists when there is diminished hearing activity. The term hearing impairment is usually reserved for people who have relative insensitivity to sound in the speech frequencies. The severity of a hearing loss is categorized according to the increase in volume above the usual level necessary before the listener can detect it
