Microsoft Word History

Before Word

The First Word

Word in 2003,2007 and 2010

Before Word there were several main word processors.(Word processors are programs which allow you to type on a computer.) Some of them were Wordstar, MacWrite and WordPerfect. Wordstar is still available yet there is no new software being built for it. MacWrite is no longer readily available although sometimes you can download a dodgy old version. WordPerfect was used a lot before Microsoft Word came out but dropped its game shortly after. It didn't release a version that could work on Windows which Microsoft Word did, therefore it was bumped out of the market and sold to another company.

Word first came out in 1983 and was called Word for MS-DOS 1.00. It was compatible on PCs and Macintosh , it was called MS-Dos as it was also a disk-operating-system. It was popular and well used but not as well known as it would become in the 1990s. During the rest on the 1980s Microsoft released three other versions of word, none of which were that popular and they didn’t really take off. The first version of word was pretty similar to Word 1.0 on Windows. One of the few differences was that the 1983 Word wasn’t compatible on Windows while the 1.0 was.

There are very few differences between Word 2003 and Word 2007. The main difference is in Mail Merge but that is only minor. Also, there are 16 drop down options in the 2003 version for File while there are 18 drop down options in the 2007 and 2010 version. There are also some minor changes to the names of different applications although the applications haven’t changed themselves. A new application is ‘publisher’ that helps create documents which will be used in blogs. In 2007 and 2010 versions the Send tool allows the user to directly turn the document into PDFs or XPSs. Finally, page set-up is more user friendly in Word 2010 than it was previously.

Word in the 1990s

Word 1.0

Word in 2013 and 2016

The first Windows version of Word came out in 1889. It became so successful as it had a two year head start on Wordstar and Wordperfect with software for Windows. It was - and still is - a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) program. This means that what you saw on the computer screen was the same as what you would get when you printed it out. Also, it showed line breaks and typeface markups such as Bold and Italics while editing as part of the WYSIWYG formatting. Word 1.0 was also one of the first word processing programs to have a large amount of mouse usage within the program. Another thing which the first version of word had was a toolbar with similar choices to the current version. It also had font choices, formatting, styles and help options. Also, it came with a magazine to help learn how to use it.

The developments in the 1990s were mainly minor updates, bug fixes and making it more user friendly. Different versions of Word were released for Windows, PC and Macintosh computers. These helped to secure Word’s place as a major part in the Word Processing market. Also, since many people were using Word in the home and on PCs it was made more user friendly. One of the ways in which this was done was an animated assistant that popped up when starting a new document. It was later removed in another update as users found it annoying. Another thing which was added was WordArt. This allowed a user to customise any text which they've written into different fonts, colours and styles.

There were quite a few differences between word 2010 and the 2013 and 2016 versions. In the 2013 and 2016 versions the following applications were added: co-edit and recently used documents can be accessed on other devices. There are fewer updates from 2010 to 2013 yet there are some interesting ones from the 2013 version to the 2016 version. Some main ones are; ‘Tell Me’ which searches through applications to find the right one based on what you've typed in, co-authors’ changes will appear on your document in real time as well as the ability to open up a mini skype window next to the document. Word 2016 may not have too many updates but it's still improved from Word 2013.
