The Life and Death of Julius Caesar

Roman Achievements

- Julius Caesar was Rome's greatest military leader.

- He conquered a great deal of land including nearly all of Gaul (which is now modern day France).

- His popularity made other political rivals jealous so he was assassinated.

- Upon Caesar's assassination two men took control of Rome, Marc Antony and Octavian (Augustus).

- As the empire expanded Rome excelled in many areas such as science and engineering, architecture, art, and literature and language.

Major Roman achievements included aqueducts, bridges, roads, frescoes, The Aeneid, the works of Ovid, mythology, and the language Latin.

The End of the Republic

- Antony and Octavian avenged the death of Caesar by driving his killers out of Rome and killing some of them.

- Antony and Octavian eventually turned against each other causing a civil war in Rome.

- Octavian won when Antony fled to Egypt where he and his wife, Cleopatra killed themselves.

The Roman Empire Expands

- As Rome became and empire it took control of the Mediterranean, most of Britain, Gaul, Asia Minor, Mesopotamia, and northern Africa.

- Rome had and wanted control over hostile neighbors and resources such as gold.

- The expansion of Rome also greatly expanded their trade.

- All the success led to the Pax Romana or a time of great Roman Peace and success.
