The shakers are a Utopian society (A Perfect Society) that believes in the second coming of Christ. They were founded in England in 1758 by a Scottish woman named Anne Lee.

The Shakers Population

Before the Civil War they had about 6000 members in their community, now, their population has dropped to a few dozen. Ann Lee predicted that when their population dropped to 5 people they would receive their renewal.

The Shakers emigrated from England to New York and then spread from Maine to Kentucky and were eventually located in Enfield, Connecticut.

How The Shakers lived

The Shakers lived by 4 basic beliefs:

1.Live Communally

2.Be Celibate~

Since they didn't believe in procreation they adopted children

3.Confess sins regularly

4.Seperate themselves from the outside world

Enfield, Connecticut

Shakers Rituals

The Shakers got their name from outsiders. They were called that because of their rituals in which they dance, shout, shake, sing and speak in unknown languages. The name started when a British Newspaper Reporter mentioned them in 1758.
