Twins

The voice that comes over the speaker that tells people what to correct in their daily lives from close observation conducted by hidden cameras that are everywhere symbolizes how no one has complete privacy, and how sameness is mandatory at all times even when no one is around. It also is a sign of control and the giver and receiver have a choice on weather or not to listen to it making it as if they are exempt to following the rules.

Red

In a Society based on sameness you would think that twins would be perfect, but in The Giver twins represent the fear of the council. In The Giver this society chooses to be led by sameness but twins represent to much sameness and cause feelings like confusion and joy of have two of the same person and the council decided to eradicate the smaller twin.

Red is a very important symbol in the book. Although it doesn't mean much it is very important it understanding the book. It symbolizes how Jonas is changing and that he is starting to see the world differently.

Bicycle

  • Children get bicycles at 9.
  • It is a sign of independence and responsibility it gives children a sign of respect by being able to go places yourself
  • Also by giving their kids more independence the parents have less to worry about and have less responsibility
