A muck fire can burn for weeks and rekindle forest fires long after people think the threat of the muck fire is gone.

What is a Muck Fire?

A muck fire is a fire that is started underground from burning brush from above or from lightning strikes. When ground water is below normal for a long enough time, it becomes flammable. Oxygen causes underground embers to smolder for weeks.
