My Birth and Family

I was born on December 25, 1829, in North Oxford, Massachusetts. I was the youngest out of five children; I had two brothers and two sisters. My father, Captain Stephen Barton, was a farmer and horse breeder and my mother, Sarah, managed our household.

After War

Who Am I?

Hi! I am Clara Barton. I am the founder of the American Red Cross. I was a volunteer that organized a collection of medicine and supplies for the deliveries to the battlefield. I was nicknamed "angel of the battlefield" because at field hospitals, I took care of the wounded, dying and assisted doctors.

After the war ended in 1865, I, Clara Barton, worked in the war department to reunite family members with the soldiers. I also became a lecturer and people came to hear my life experiences during the war.
