Dante's Inferno: Canto 33

Overview

Upon meeting Count Ugolino, Dante sees him gnawing at the head of Archbishop Ruggieri. As they talk, Dante learns that Ugolino was imprisoned for treason along with his 4 sons & grandsons. Ruggieri denies them food so the sons die of starvation. Ugolino is overcome by grief & supposedly dies as well.

Symbolism

Ice

-Hell = commonly fire

-Ice symbolizes cold-hearted acts of sinners

-Heaven is warm of comfort

Setting

Forever Punished

When Ugolino is retelling his story, he is reliving his death. His horror with his own tale is clear in his words, "You ask me to renew a grief...the very thought...of it tears my heart in two." The immortality of his story strengthens as it is retold.

Dante & Virgil are passing through the 9th circle of Hell. In Canto three, they pass through 2 of 4 rings. The second ring is known as "Antenora". Later on, Dante and Virgil travel to the third ring "Ptolomea".

Analysis Of Passage

First half

Moving beyond Ugolino, Dante & Virgil find Fra Alberigo & Bronca. Both are men who live on Earth but their souls were sent to Hell because of their crimes. They lay on the freezing ice. The terrain is so cold that even when they weep from tears, the tears freeze immediately. The lake serves as their prison.

Our Bloody Cupcakes

Second half

Chocolate covered strawberry flavored cupcakes. The red cake represents the bloodiness of Ugolino eating Ruggieri & the icing represents the element of flesh. The sprinkles symbolize the individuals who's souls are trapped in the frozen lake.
