Gender Based Education

What is Gender Based Education?

CONS of Gender Based Education

PROS of Gender Based Education

At the classroom level, single-sex instruction offers specific gender-friendly opportunities for enhancing learning by directly addressing many of the challenges and stressors in boys' and girls' educational and personal lives.

  • If teachers don't receive the right training, it won't make a difference at all.
  • Increases tension between genders, as they don't learn how to interact.
  • Can lead to educational inequality.
  • It is expensive and cumbersome to implement.
  • You can adjust your entire classroom to meet the needs of your class as a whole.
  • Helps reduce distractions from the opposite sex and allows students to branch out in areas of interest without worrying about the opposite sex's opinion or approval, leading to greater personal development
  • "In science we talk more this year because the boys aren't there. I like it when we [girls] get to talk things out. I understand things better when we can talk and share." (Sophie, middle school girl)
  • "We are not distracted by girls and we don't feel so self-conscious. If I say something a little "off," I don't feel as stupid as I would in front of girls." (Nathan, middle school boy)
  • Removes Gender stereotype.

I do not agree with having single-sex classrooms.

I think that teachers should be prepared to teach to different learning styles, so boys and girls can be in the same classes and don't miss out on the interactions of a co-ed classroom.

I don't think that having single-sex classrooms is more beneficial to elementary aged students than having a co-ed class.

I think that there are many valuable lessons, other than academic, that are learned in co-ed classrooms.
