Learning Objectives:

The sun, planets, and moons in our solar system have specific characteristics and follow observable patterns

There are cycles and patterns in our solar system and universe / some of the effects of these cycles and patterns are observable to us on earth

There are observable, predictable patterns of movement in the Sun, Earth, and Moon system that account for day/night

Our solar system has a star around which the inner and outer planets all revolve

There is motion occurring in the solar system all the time, among the planets, moons, and sun, and this can be evidenced by observations and data collection through science notebooking

Scientific inquiry involves asking scientifically-oriented questions, collecting evidence, forming explanations, connecting explanations to scientific knowledge and theory, and communicating and justifying explanations.

Standards:

3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.

5-ESS1-2. Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.
