QUESTIONS!!!! (remember if you answer the questions right you will get candy!)

Main Idea

Let's see if you can remember some of the events that took place in chapter 3....

There are many things that stand out in Chapter 3. For example the way Katniss conveys herself.Katniss shows us that she is a very caring sister (ie."I volunteer as Tribute!"). Katniss also shows us that she is very strong for example "at the train station camera's are everywhere and Katniss is greatful that she can mask her emotions".

  • The main idea of chapter 3 is being able to learn how to be independent/self-reliant.
  • Independence/Self-reliant: Katniss left her family to fight in the games in order to survive.
  • The act of her leaving her family,is a huge tough step for Katniss because she always had to be a mother figure for Prim (her sister). For example "Ever since my father died, i have provided for my family."

Mocking Jay Pin symbolizes Rebellion, survival and the ability to adapt

Train tunnel symbolizes the Threshold to Independance

SUMMARY

OPINION QUESTIONS (no answer is wrong it just has to make sense)

Tone/Attitude/Mood

Significant events presented:

Katniss and the other candidates are taken into custody. Then are divided and taken into fancy rooms, where each tribute is allowed to say their final goodbyes. Prim and her Mother visit Katniss and Katniss gives them instructions on how to survive. Prim makes Katniss promise to try to win; despite Katniss's doubts about her abilities in the competition. Katniss is surprised, by her next visitor; Peeta Mellark's father, the baker. He offers Katniss cookies and promises to make sure Prim does not starve. After the baker leaves, Madge, the mayor's daughter enters the room. She offers Katniss a circular gold pin to wear as a token and, on the pin is a Mockingjay. The last visitor is Gale, who Katniss hugs very tightly. He advises her to get her hands immediately on a bow during the Games even if she has to make one. The peacekeepers arrive and force Gale to leave, but before he does, he says "Katniss, remember I –," but isn't allowed to finish that thought. At the train station, cameras are everywhere and Katniss is happy that she knows how to hide her emotions. Peeta, on the other hand, has been crying. Katniss wonders if this is a strategy. When they arrived at the Capitol, Katniss takes a shower in the room that she is given and gets dressed for dinner, then she puts on Madge's gold pin. At dinner, Katniss and Peeta eat courses of rich food and Effie Trinket comments on their polite manners, which she says is different from past Seam tributes, which only angers Katniss. She then eats the rest of the meal with her fingers. Effie, Haymitch, Peeta and Katniss all watch the rest of the tributes in the rest of the districts. A few tributes stand out: a "monstrous boy" from District 2, a "fox-faced girl" form District 5, a crippled boy from District 10, and a small girl with "dark brown skin and eyes" from District 11. She reminds Katniss of Prim.

Characters:

What message is the author trying to convey you say?

Katniss,Gale,Prim,Katniss's Mother,Peeta Mellark's Father,Madge and the other Tributes

Suzanne Collins uses many different emotions in chapter 3, although Katniss does know how to mask her emotions we can infer that she was exteremely sad when Prim got called for the reaping. We can also infer that Katniss was terrified of letting down Prim's promise to try to win. Some other emotions that were conveyed in chapter 3 was the surprised expression Katniss gave when she first entered the fancy room with alot of fancy food's that she had never even heard of.

Place:

Panem, taken into custody then into the train.

Time:

In the morning right after the reaping.

The message that the author is trying to convey is that we cannot always rely on others, we have to have self-courage. Katniss volunteered to take her sister’s place; she had no other choice, because no one else would take Prim’s place, and she loves her sister so much. She knew that volunteering meant that she had be brave. Katniss showed a good example here, because she proved that self-courage is something that is required of everybody, there would be a part our lives where we will have to have confidence .

2.What did the baker give to Katniss?

6.

8.Can you infer what Gale was trying to say to Katniss before he was ushered out of the room?
