The Fault

The Lisbon earthquake occurred in the Atlantic Ocean on November 1st in the year of 1755. Many buildings in Lisbon were destroyed by the earthquake. What’s worse – fires from candles and cooking fires – spread to the houses. Many people fled to the river and the sea where they boarded boats. Only 30 minutes after the earthquake, a tsunami came into the city. The Great Lisbon Earthquake was the first earthquake studied scientifically to evaluate its effect over large areas.

Because of this huge earthquake, modern seismology was developed. The Lisbon earthquake was felt in Finland and North Africa and even in Greenland and the Caribbean.

The fault is locates on Central Atlantic Ocean west of the Strait of Gibraltar

The Azores-Gibraltar fault or the transforming Azores-Gibraltar fault, also called the Azores-Gibraltar fault zone.

The Azores–Gibraltar Transform Fault, called a fault zone and a fracture zone, is a major seismic fault. It is the product of the complex interaction between the African, Eurasian, and Iberian plates. The AGFZ produced the large-magnitude earthquakes 1755 Lisbon and 1969 Horseshoe and, consequently, a number of large tsunamis.

The Azores–Gibraltar Transform Fault stretches between the Strait of Gibraltar and the Azores Triple Junction

What type of fault is the Azores-Gibraltar?

The Azores-Gibraltar is a type of Strike-Slips fault. These faults occur when two tectonic plates slide one another into different directions. The Strike-Slip faults occur at the boundary that is between two plates of earth's crust.
