Using Turning Point (ARS) to provide feedback

Turning Point as an Audience Response System

S. Williams

What can Turning Point offer?

* Provides data about a students performance on the set of questions and their response for each question (to identify individual areas of weakness for further follow-up

* provides class data (identifies areas that may need teaching in a different way or more time during revision for exams)

What is 'feedback'?

"Feedback reduces the gap between where the student is and where they want to be"........

feedback thrives on error, but error should not be considered the privilege of lower-achieving students.....

Error is the difference between what we know and can do, and what we aim to know and do - and that applies to all (struggling and talented; students and teachers). Knowing this error is fundamental to moving towards success. This is the purpose of feedback." Hattie (2012) Visible learning for teachers: Maximising impact on learning, p115

Why is immediate feedback important?

PRINCIPLES OF GOOD FEEDBACK PRACTICE

  • 1. helps clarify what good performance is (goals, criteria, expected standards)
  • 2. facilitates the development of self-assessment (reflection) in learning
  • 3. delivers high quality information to students about their learning
  • 4. encourages teacher and peer dialogue around learning
  • 5. encourages positive motivational beliefs and self-esteem
  • 6. provides opportunities to close the gap between current and desired performance
  • 7. Provides information to teachers that can be used to help shape the teaching

Student Progress

Three feedback questions

QUESTIONS

1. Are students/classes achieving the results they should be?

2. If multiple classes are taught, are the classes achieving to the same extent? Are there any common topics that they appear to be less confident in?

HOW CAN WE DETERMINE STUDENT PROGRESS?

Use of VCAA data

Use of data from class assessments

Task: How well has the task been performed?

Where am I going? What are my goals?

Process: What strategies are needed to perform the task?

How am I going? What progress is being made towards the goal?

Self-regulation: What conditional knowledge and understanding is needed to know what you are doing? Where to next? What activities need to be undertaken next to make better progress?

Hattie (2012)

How can Audience Response Systems provide immediate feedback?

Audience response systems provide immediate feedback and allow dialogue between teacher and student and student and peers

Audience response systems can quickly identify misconceptions held by a student or by a class - feedback for teacher that can be used to monitor teaching program

Audience response systems collect data on individual students and class data for reflection by teacher
